When your custom portal or mobile app lives outside Salesforce, the org becomes a data source, not the application. Salesforce still enforces API authentication and object-level security, but it has no control over how your portal authenticates end users, manages their sessions, or decides what data to surface to the API. If your external app over-fetches data or is too lax in the foreign keys allowed in inserts/updates, Salesforce cannot protect you from your own architecture.
